What is a Midwesterner, you ask? A Midwesterner is someone who lives in or who is from the Midwest – the northern central area of the United States. The 12 Midwest states are Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. If you are from one of these states or know someone who is, you will recognize the qualities this post is going to discuss, and the 5 Reasons Midwesterners are the Best people to know!
‘Midwest Nice’ is Real
Have you ever heard someone use the term Midwest Nice? Midwesterners are known for being an extremely nice group of people. When someone wrongs a Midwesterner, the standard response is “You’re fine” even though chances are, you are definitely NOT fine. They just do not want to be confrontational or hurt your feelings. Additionally, smiling at total strangers and saying hello is common throughout the Midwest. Not to mention the finger wave when passing on a dirt road.
Midwesterners are resilient people. As a matter of fact, surviving the Midwest’s extreme weather conditions make Midwesterners the toughest people in the United States! Summers in the Midwest can reach temperatures of over 100 degrees for weeks at a time. Winter temperatures can go down to -30 degrees or worse! With this in mind, everyone loves ‘hoodie and shorts’ weather. Hoodie and shorts weather is when shorts are acceptable, but a hoodie should be worn too.
You might have heard the Midwest only has fields of corn and nothing to do. This cannot be further from the truth! During a Midwestern Summer you are most likely to plan a trip and go ‘tanking’ down a river. For those that don’t know, this involves floating down the river in a livestock tank, yes, the ones out in the fields that the livestock drink from. Weekends are for Corn Hole tournaments and lake days. In the fall, hometown football games replace days at the lake. Winter brings sledding along with freezing at the Winter Parade.
While spending time with a Midwesterner you realize they use some creative words and phrases the rest of the United States find odd. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Ope. It is common thing to say when encountering something or someone. “Ope, let me sneak past you” or “Ope, I just found my phone”. Use it in place of saying sorry or oops.
- Uffda. This word exclaims surprise, disbelief or frustration.
- Oh, Fer Cute. Use this word to indicate that you find something adorable.
- Puppy Chow. All Midwesterners know this is NOT for dogs. This is a delicious, sweet treat made with cereal, chocolate and peanut butter.
- Tennis shoes. In the Midwest, Tennis Shoes means ALL athletic shoes, rarely used to actually play tennis.
Midwesterners are extremely hardworking! As a matter of fact, even the kids are hardworking. In the Midwest, there is a lot of farming going on and that is a family affair. That being the case, farm kids learn what hard work is from a young age. To tell the truth, describing someone as lazy is one of the worst things to say about a Midwesterner.
Now that you are done reading the reasons why I think Midwesterners are the BEST people to know, I hope you agree! Growing up in the Midwest is a blessing! Additionally, I picked up wonderful traits and have some strange words and phrases to make conversations interesting. If you do not know a Midwesterner, you should definitely visit a Midwest state!
